For many years I suffered from writer’s block. It was quite literally, torture.
Then I realized, a lot of it had to do with shyness, or fear of failure.
AFTERWARDS, I learned to say: “So what? Who cares what people think of me.”
And that’s all that matters. What people “THINK” of you. People don’t know other people. They just get an idea of that person, good or bad. They form opinions. What does it matter what kind of person I am. If you are interested in my writing, it shouldn’t make a difference. Maybe social media has made people wreckless, in that sense. No boundaries, no common respect, etc.
In my early years of writer’s block, I thought nothing was “Good enough.”
I’d throw everything away. Or it got lost. This is one of the biggest mistakes writers make. You never throw away any notes or writing, even if it’s the silliest thing. You can use the ideas later. Just never throw it away.
Another big mistake is that when ANY name or idea pops into your head. You should immediately write it down. I guarantee you, as much as you claim to have a 100% working memory, you might not remember the next day. So it’s always important to have a pen and pad next to you, even when you go outside.
Other problems I encountered during writer’s block.
It’s good to know what you’re good at. What interests you. What excites you.
So, if you are writing Fiction or Non-fiction. Take a while to educate yourself about that genre. Learn about other authors, spend some time reading. It doesn’t even have to be a lot. But at least make the effort. And look for inspiration.
I take most of my inspiration from old magazines. The articles are shorter than reading a full-length novel….and I get to look at pictures. Fast and easy.
If you still don’t have any ideas.
Maybe you can find something you connect with. Characters with moral dilemmas….
What would you like to change? As far as good vs bad…. Morals you would like to set….
What is good? What is bad? Do you think society is headed in the right direction? If you could change people’s attitudes about life? What kind of morals would you like to set?
Maybe they have a vice towards food, alcohol, and tobacco? Maybe writing a book can persuade them to live a healthy life? Would you like to see less diseases in the world?
Do you think society is too materialistic? Or maybe they have an unrealistic view about relationships?
So, if you are writing fiction. It’s good to have a character list.
It’s good to know what that character looks like or sounds like. Try experimenting with lines, would ‘Character A’ say it? Or ‘Character B’? Don’t base characters on real people or use real names.
Also, remember that if you are going to write about a general place, check it out first.
If you are going to write about a brand, try and find out if that brand allows you to, if not, go and make up your own fictitious brand name. No big deal.
What people will think. Reviewers. Even bad reviewers are good to have. Take their advice and use it in the next one…. But be brave and strong enough to face the trolls every day.
Final note:
Fuck writer’s block. Who cares about what people think of you or your writing. Sometimes the work itself is more important than it being “Perfect.” Because that is an unrealistic expectation. Nothing and no one is “Perfect.” Write whatever you want, just make it original, make it yours, don’t copy others, HAVE YOUR OWN STYLE (and make sure it’s legible). Just be ready for the trolls. Be strong, be brave, and don’t take any insults they say seriously. Just focus on your work.
